Visit Wichita – Play Day

To celebrate the 2013 National Travel and Tourism Week, Visit Wichita (formerly Go Wichita) attempted to combat Wichitans’ common complaint that “there is nothing to do in Wichita.” The job of promoting tourism becomes much more difficult if the people living in the city don’t think the city is an exciting place to live or visit. To fight this negative perception of the city, Visit Wichita gave¬†away 1,000 tickets to ten local attractions for free.

The campaign worked wonderfully. Visit Wichita gave away all 1,000 tickets and heard great stories about people exploring attractions they never new existed in Wichita. The campaign won the Travel Industry Association of Kansas’ Best Integrated Marketing Award and the Public Relation Society of America’s Clarus Award of Excellence for Special Events and Occurrences.

Thank you to Visit Wichita’s 10 local partners for making this campaign possible: Botanica, Exploration Place, Kansas African American Museum, Kansas Aviation Museum, Mid-America All-Indian Center, Museum of World Treasures, Old Cowtown Museum, Sedgwick County Zoo, Tanganyika Wildlife Park, and the Wichita Art Museum.
